WEAVE - WEEK 16 Soft Infrastructure
WhatsApp groups, boda networks, favours, cousins, mobile money, memory. The invisible systems carrying African commerce.

W — WORK
When we think about infrastructure, we usually picture roads, bridges, ports, railways and power stations. These are the visible systems that connect people, places and markets. Yet across much of Africa, another kind of infrastructure quietly carries everyday commerce.
It is made of relationships.
It is built on trust rather than concrete, memory rather than databases, favours rather than formal contracts. It is the WhatsApp group that alerts members to a new source of fibre. The boda boda rider who delivers materials to a remote village and returns with finished baskets. The cousin who watches the children while someone travels to collect an order. The neighbour who advances a small loan until payment arrives. The savings group that steps in when illness or opportunity unexpectedly appears.
This is soft infrastructure.
It is largely invisible, rarely measured, and almost never acknowledged in economic statistics. Yet without it, many craft economies would simply stop.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in Kenya's craft sector.
From the bustling stalls of Kariokor Market in Nairobi to the woodworkers of Kitui, the soapstone carvers of Kisii and the basket weavers of eastern Kenya, production depends on a network of social systems that operate alongside formal markets. Materials, labour, knowledge, transport and finance flow through relationships that have been built over many years.
When we visited the weaving groups, Katunge, one of the older artisans, reflected on how dramatically one innovation had changed their working lives.
"Before M-Pesa," she explained, "getting paid was always difficult."
Payments often travelled slowly through several intermediaries before reaching the weavers. Accessing banks was expensive, time-consuming and often impractical for women living far from urban centres. Delayed payments created uncertainty throughout the production process.
Today, mobile money has transformed that landscape.
"We can be paid immediately," she said. "If someone is stranded or needs money quickly, a friend can send it. Sometimes the savings group helps us until the work is finished, then we repay."
M-Pesa has become far more than a payment system. It has become part of the social fabric that allows livelihoods to continue.
But digital finance is only one thread.
Katunge is equally quick to point to family.
When women travel to purchase sisal, attend training sessions, collect orders or participate in meetings, someone must remain behind to care for children, livestock and the home. Those responsibilities rarely disappear simply because work calls elsewhere.
Family, neighbours and trusted friends quietly absorb these responsibilities.
Their labour rarely appears in discussions about productivity, yet it makes production possible.
Transport has undergone a similar transformation.
"The boda bodas are such a blessing," Katunge laughed.
Motorcycle taxis have dramatically reduced the final distance between producers and markets. More importantly, many riders have become trusted couriers, collecting materials, delivering finished work and carrying payments between communities.
The same journey that once required an entire day can often be completed within hours.
Communication, however, remains uneven.
Katunge does not own a smartphone. Her previous one eventually stopped working, so she now uses a basic mobile phone while saving for another.
Fortunately, her group's chairlady owns a smartphone.
She shares photographs of finished work, circulates information about material prices, relays customer feedback and coordinates orders through WhatsApp. Members without smartphones receive updates through phone calls or face-to-face conversations.
Digital technology has expanded opportunity, but it has not removed inequality.
Even today, smartphones, reliable data bundles and stable electricity remain unevenly distributed. Connectivity exists on a spectrum rather than as a simple yes or no.
The final ingredient may be the least visible of all.
Memory.
Years of experience allow artisans to remember measurements without patterns, repeat complex designs without written instructions, identify reliable suppliers, judge fibre quality, recall customer preferences and navigate relationships built over decades.
This accumulated knowledge is itself an infrastructure.
Before cloud storage, there was collective memory.
Before digital platforms, there was reputation.
Before logistics software, there were trusted relationships.
As our conversation drew to a close, Katunge smiled.
"We cannot wait for politicians to solve everything," she said. "We just keep going."
There was no bitterness in her voice.
Only quiet determination.
Perhaps that is the defining characteristic of soft infrastructure.
It does not wait for perfect systems.
It builds the ones people need.
E — EYE
Replacing the Real with the Lookalike
One unexpected trend emerged during this week's exploration of luxury bags and homeware.
Natural fibres such as raffia, sisal, jute and hemp are increasingly being imitated by woven paper and synthetic alternatives. Many products marketed as "raffia-effect" or "natural-look" now contain little, if any, natural fibre.
The reasons are understandable.
Machine-produced paper fibres are significantly cheaper and offer manufacturers remarkable consistency. They arrive in uniform widths, predictable colours and continuous lengths, reducing waste and simplifying production.
Natural fibres behave differently.
Every strand carries slight variations in colour, texture, thickness and strength. These irregularities require skill to manage but also give handcrafted objects their distinctive character.
Synthetic and paper alternatives remove much of this uncertainty.
They also expand creative possibilities through a wider colour palette and predictable manufacturing performance.
Yet something subtle changes when variability disappears.
The object may look almost identical.
Its story does not.
Natural fibres carry evidence of climate, harvest, landscape and human labour. They record where they came from and how they were transformed.
As manufacturing becomes increasingly efficient, perhaps the greatest luxury will not be perfect uniformity, but provenance.
Craft rarely survives because it is the cheapest option. It survives because people continue to value where things come from, how they are made, and how long they remain useful.

Craft offers an alternative rhythm. It asks us to slow down, to notice materials, to work with our hands and to value processes that unfold over time rather than instantly.
V — VOICE
Kenya is frequently celebrated as one of Africa's leading digital economies, and with good reason. Mobile money has transformed financial inclusion, while smartphones have opened new markets and new ways of working.
But connectivity is not a single achievement.
Owning a phone is different from owning a smartphone. A smartphone is different from having affordable data. Reliable data is different from possessing the confidence and digital skills to use it effectively.
When we describe artisans as "connected", what do we actually mean?
Understanding these differences may be just as important as expanding digital access itself.
